After falling to Lancaster 3-2 on Sunday afternoon, the Blue Crabs would need a victory on Monday night to win the four-game series against the Barnstormers.

Southern Maryland did just that, handing the Barnstormers a 7-3 loss. The Blue Crabs collected 16 hits against a Barnstormers pitching staff that used six arms throughout the game.

Shortstop Eric Garcia drove in four of the Blue Crabs’ runs, three coming on a sixth inning three-run home run. The home run scored Gustavo Molina and Alfredo Marte after Molina singled and Marte doubled. The three-run bomb broke a tie game and gave Southern Maryland a 5-2 lead.

Garcia did damage in the fourth inning too, driving in Southern Maryland’s first run on an RBI ground-out that scored Marte from third base. Gary Brown drove in another fourth-inning run for the Blue Crabs on a single.

The Barnstormers hit three home runs in their losing effort, including a pair in the fifth inning by Mike Jacobs and Charlie Cutler. Josh Bell’s home run came in the sixth after Southern Maryland scored four runs in the top half of the inning.

Zach Wilson, who homered in Southern Maryland’s 3-2 win on Saturday night, drove in a Southern Maryland run in the sixth inning on a single.

In the eighth inning, the Blue Crabs added another run on a Bryant Nelson sacrifice fly. Over the weekend, Nelson was a thorn in Lancaster’s side. Over the course of this series, he was 8 for 13 with five RBI. The 42-year-old has hit safely in eight straight games.

Southern Maryland starter Daryl Thompson earned his third win of the season, going 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. He did not allow a walk, and threw 76 pitches, 53 for strikes. Thompson is now 3-6.

Lancaster starter Bryan Evans took the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches, 63 for strikes. Evans is also now 3-6.

The Barnstormers now travel to New Britain for a four-game set against the Bees. The series will take place over three days, featuring a day / night double-header on Wednesday. Game one starts at 12:05 pm, and game two will start at 6:35 pm.

The Barnstormers will return to Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday for a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch on Friday night is at 7:00 pm.
